Update: In the past 20 years, China’s organic agriculture and food sector has been catching up with leading global producers and markets. China is now among the ten countries with the largest area of certified agricultural land and has developed a robust regulatory framework.
But despite its recent advancements and political support at the highest levels, the sector still faces severe challenges, ranging from high production costs to limited consumer trust.
This updated study with the latest available data from 2023 traces the development of China’s organic food and farm sector from its modest beginnings until today, explores China’s role in global organic food markets, and highlights new trends and changes.
