The Institute of Plant Protection at the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences (XAAS) was established in 1955. It is the only provincial comprehensive research institution in Xinjiang specializing in the research and prevention of agricultural and forestry pests. The institute currently has 47 employees.
Key research areas include the integrated management of diseases and insect pests in food crops, cotton, fruit trees, and vegetables, as well as the prevention and control of invasive alien organisms in agriculture and forestry. Other focus areas include monitoring and ecological safety evaluation of genetically modified crops, domestication and cultivation of edible fungi, integrated pest control technology for specialty crops, pesticide resistance research, and weed and rodent pest management. The institute has a 4,450 m² laboratory equipped with complete facilities.
In recent years, the institute has established four national research platforms: Key Laboratory of Integrated Management of Pests in Northwest Desert Oasis Crop of the Ministry of Agriculture, National Plant Protection Korla Observation Experiment Station, National Natural Enemy Insect Korla Observation Experiment Station, and MARA Korla Crop Pest Scientific Observation Experiment Station.
It also serves as a technical support unit for four provincial research platforms: National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Xinjiang Characteristic Fruit Industry – Xinjiang Oasis Fruit Pest Management Research Sub-center, Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences Plant Protection Institute Agricultural and Forestry Pest Natural Enemy Breeding Center, Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences Plant Protection Institute Transgenic Cotton Environmental Safety Monitoring Test Base, and Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences Plant Protection Institute Pesticide Production Pilot Base.
The institute has 608 mu of field bases, 2,100 m² of greenhouses, 400 m² of net rooms, 400 m³ of cold storage, and 780 m² of vegetable greenhouses.
