The Jilin Academy of Agricultural Sciences (JAAS) – 吉林省农业科学院is a comprehensive agricultural research institution under the direct administration of the Jilin provincial government. It is responsible for conducting major national and provincial applied basic research, applied research, and the development of agricultural high-tech industries. The academy has two campuses: its headquarters in Changchun and the Gongzhuling campus, located 60 kilometers away, covering an area of 552 hectares. Additionally, JAAS has a 132-hectare comprehensive experimental station in Taonan, a 73.2-hectare scientific experimental base in Hainan, and a 43.4-hectare test site in Fanjiatun.

The institution traces its origins to the South Manchurian Railway Corporation Gongzhuling Industrial Experiment Field, established in 1913. In 1958, it became the Northeast Agricultural Science Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. A year later, it was transferred to Jilin Province and restructured into the Jilin Academy of Agricultural Sciences. In 2004, Jilin Province and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences jointly established the Northeast China Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Center, which operates as part of JAAS. The academy currently consists of 12 administrative offices, 18 research institutes, a comprehensive service center for experimental sites, and a staple food engineering research center. It has a total staff of 1,094, including 864 scientific and technical personnel, of whom 467 hold senior professional and technical positions.

JAAS specializes in corn breeding and hybrid soybean development, with notable achievements such as the “Hybrid Bean 1” variety. It is also engaged in large-scale plant transgenic technology, as well as the selection and breeding of germplasm resources and new crop varieties. The academy has made significant advancements in biological pest control, including large-scale biocontrol of the corn borer using red-eye wasps. In the field of animal husbandry, JAAS has successfully developed several breeds, including the Grassland Red Cattle, China’s first dual-purpose cattle breed, and the Songliao Black Pig, a lean pig variety suited for northern China.
