On 30 October 2026, Rita Merkle, Head of Science Dialogue at the Sino-German Agricultural Centre (DCZ), gave a presentation at a seminar organised by the EU SME Centre and the Italian Chamber of Commerce in China, held in Beijing and online.
One of her key points was that China’s organic food market is growing, and so is demand for imported products, but European producers can’t simply rely on their EU organic certification. Because there is currently no mutual recognition between the EU and Chinese systems, anyone who wants to sell products as “organic” in China needs separate Chinese certification.
Her presentation gave an overview of the market’s size and development, what Chinese consumers look for, and how imports are evolving. It then turned to the practical side: how the two certification systems differ, what the Chinese procedure involves, and what EU producers should consider before entering the market.
