While China approves hundreds of seed varieties every year, many of them are critized as having little commercial value. A major overhaul of China’s Seed Law coming into force on 01 March 2022 seeks to address this issue. Stronger intellectual property rights for plant breeders and the introduction of a system of essentially derived varieties (EDVs) will bring China’s legal framework more in line with international norms, finds the present DCZ policy brief, likely improving the quality and innovation level of domestically developed seeds.
