Rapid structural change is transforming rural areas across Germany and China. This process leads to shifts in the size of farms, changes agricultural practices and land use patterns, accelerates the mobility of people, and introduces new interactions between agriculture and other sectors of the economy. It yields enormous potential for more prosperous and attractive rural areas, but also risks deepening inequalities between large and small farms as well as between cities and the countryside.
This issue of Harvest ∙ 丰收 seeks to provide insights into the structural transformations that are reshaping farming landscapes in both Germany and China.
