SaatGut-Erhalter-Netzwerk Ost: Preserving biodiversity in East Germany
The SaatGut-Erhalter-Netzwerk Ost is a collaborative network focused on the preservation and revival of old vegetable varieties in eastern Germany, including Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The network connects seed and vegetable-growing operations, universities, and NGOs to identify, cultivate, and propagate heirloom vegetable varieties from seed banks, aiming to reintroduce them to local food systems. Through research, breeding, and seed multiplication, the network works to enhance biodiversity and promote sustainable agriculture. It offers opportunities for individuals and organizations to participate by becoming members, supporting through donations or seed sponsorships, attending events, and accessing sources for heirloom seeds and fresh vegetables. The network is coordinated by VERN e.V. and hosts various activities such as workshops, meetings, and events that highlight the importance of preserving these valuable genetic resources.
