Founded in 1979, the Agro-Environmental Protection Institute (AEPI) – 农业农村部环境保护科研监测所 focuses on pollution prevention and control, ecological and environmental safety inspection, environmental monitoring, environmental assessment, and information services. The institute employs 134 people, including 119 scientists. AEPI includes the following departments:
- Key Laboratory of Agro-Environment and Product Safety
- Agro-Environmental Monitoring Center of MARA
- Agro-Environmental Supervision, Inspection and Testing Center
- Eco-agriculture Laboratory (Supervision, Inspection & Testing Center for Eco-Environment Safety of Genetically Modified Organisms)
- Environmental Impact Assessment Department
AEPI specializes in areas such as:
- Fast detection of pesticide residues
- Multi-residue analysis technology for pesticides in agro-food and the agro-environment
- Testing for heavy metal adsorption in water and soil
- Research and demonstration of irrigation using recycled water
- Composite anaerobic baffled reactor (CABR) with constructed wetland channels
