The Biogas Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture (BIOMA) – 农业农村部沼气科学研究所 was established in 1979 and has been affiliated with CAAS since 1997. As the only national institution specializing in biogas technology, BIOMA focuses on biogas production from agricultural waste for energy recovery, environmental protection, and technological demonstrations. The institute also provides consultation services to decision-makers in the biogas sector, training for technical and management personnel, and supervises and inspects biogas facilities and appliances.
BIOMA has a staff of 110, including 19 professors and 32 associate professors. Research teams at BIOMA work on:
- Anaerobic microbiology
- Biogas fermentation processes and facilities
- Straw and livestock manure utilization for energy and pollution control
- Quality and safety risk assessment of biogas fermentation products
- Design of biogas projects
- Pollution control and ecological restoration in rural areas
BIOMA’s research covers the entire industry chain, including:
- Collection and preservation of energy microorganisms
- Microbial mechanisms of biogas fermentation
- Fermentation processes, technology, and plants
- Equipment for fermentation and purification of fermentation products
BIOMA also offers international training programs, technology transfer, and technical assistance to developing countries. This includes programs sponsored by FAO, UNIDO, MoST, and MARA. The institute has 19 platforms, including:
- FAO Reference Centre for Biogas and Training
- Key Laboratory of MARA for Development and Utilization of Rural Renewable Energy
