The Biotechnology Research Institute (BRI) – 生物技术研究所 was founded in 1986 and covers eight key research areas:

- Plant Molecular Biology for Stress Resistance
- Plant Nutrition and Metabolic Engineering
- Plant Functional Genomics
- Gene Expression and Bioreactors
- Agro-Microbial Genetic Engineering
- Environmental Microbial Genetic Engineering
- Biosafety of GMOs
The Institute hosts key laboratories and centers, including:
The institute spans 7,000 square meters of laboratories and 1,200 square meters of greenhouses and field stations located in Hainan (Sanya), Beijing (Pinggu), and Hebei (Langfang). The Institute employs approximately 126 staff members.
