The Buffalo Research Institute (BRI) – 水牛研究所 is the only specialized research institute on buffalo in China. Established in 1958, it is affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Bureau of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Located in the northern suburbs of Nanning, the institute spans 300 ha and is China’s largest buffalo breeding base. It includes the National Key Breeding Buffalo Farm and the MARA Key Laboratory of Buffalo Genetics, Breeding, and Reproduction Technology.
Since its founding, the institute has made significant achievements in artificial insemination, crossbreeding improvement, selective breeding of new varieties, in vitro fertilization, feed and nutrition, as well as milk and meat product processing.
