CAS Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES)

The Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) – 生态环境研究所 was originally founded in 1975 as the Institute of Environmental Chemistry. It was the first comprehensive research institution in China dedicated to eco-environmental science and technology. In 1986, the center was amalgamated with the Research Center of Ecology of CAS, resulting in the creation of RCEES. In June 1999, it became part of the Pilot Project of the Knowledge Innovation Program of CAS.

Currently, RCEES employs 473 staff members, including 5 academicians, 105 research professors, 106 associate professors, 179 assistant professors, and 28 junior researchers or administrators. The center operates 11 research departments or laboratories, which include three state key laboratories:

  • State Key Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology
  • State Key Laboratory of Aquatic Chemistry
  • State Key Laboratory of Urban and Regional Ecology

The center also manages 8 departments for administration or management and other sections.

Additionally, RCEES houses the Laboratory of Soil Environmental Science, focusing on research in soil and environmental sciences.
