East China Sea Fisheries Research Institute (ECSF)

The East China Sea Fisheries Research Institute (ECSF) of CAFS – 中国水产科学研究院东海水产研究所 is a national comprehensive fishery research institution. Its headquarters are located in Yangpu District, Shanghai, covering an area of approximately 22,000 square meters. The institute also has experimental research bases in Fengxian (Shanghai), Qionghai (Hainan), Fuding (Fujian), Ganyu (Jiangsu), and Ninghai (Zhejiang).

The research conducted by ECSF focuses on:

  • Pelagic and polar fishery resources
  • Estuary and offshore fishery ecology
  • Fishery resource protection and utilization
  • Fishing and fishery engineering
  • Fishery ecological environment assessment and protection
  • Aquaculture technology
  • Aquatic genetics, breeding, and biotechnology
  • Aquatic product processing and quality safety
  • Fishery information and strategy

The institute employs 450 people. The institute also boasts 16 key laboratories and platforms, 2 300-ton fishery resource survey ships, 1 3,000-ton marine fishery comprehensive scientific survey ship, and over 3,300 scientific instruments and pieces of equipment. It publishes the academic journals Marine Fisheries and Fisheries Information and Strategy.
