The Environment and Plant Protection Research Institute (EPPI) of CATAS – 环境与植物保护研究所 was established in 1954 and has 195 employees, including 90 senior scientists. EPPI’s research primarily focuses on tropical crops and environmental protection, promoting eco-agriculture in tropical China, and fostering international collaboration in these areas. Key areas of research include monitoring and controlling significant tropical pests, early warning systems for invasive species, bio-control resources, and the application of plant protection resources.
Additional research activities focus on the post-harvest storage and transportation of tropical fruits and vegetables, ecological agriculture, environmental safety assessments, pollution control, and functional genomics research on important pathogens. EPPI also provides technical services to farmers, including the development of technologies to control the coconut leaf beetle using parasitoids, as well as using natural enemies to control significant rubber tree pests like Cerococcus quercus Comstock and the six-spotted mite.
