Institute of Animal Sciences (IAS)

Established in 1957, the Institute of Animal Sciences (IAS) – 北京畜牧兽医研究所 employs approximately 150 scientists and technicians. It covers a total area of 37 hectares, including 4 experimental bases, such as an experimental farm located in Changping District. The Institute consists of 6 research departments: Animal Nutrition and Feed Science, Animal Biotechnology and Reproduction, Animal Germplasm Resources and Production, Grassland Science, Veterinary Medicine, and Livestock Product Quality and Service. The following research fields are covered:

  • Animal nutrition and feed science
  • Animal germplasm resources and breeding
  • Animal biotechnology and reproduction: Research includes domestic cloning techniques, new methods of cultivating transgenic animals, domestic animal embryo engineering, bioreactors for mammary glands and avian eggs, as well as structural and functional genomics of WZS swine and Beijing fat chicken.
  • Grassland science: Includes the collection, conservation, and evaluation of germplasm resources of forage crops, genetics, breeding, and biotechnology of forage crops, as well as grassland ecology and sustainable utilization of grassland resources.
  • Veterinary medicine: Focuses on the epidemiology of pet diseases, diagnostic techniques for tuberculosis, pet diseases, and exotic animal diseases, genetically engineered vaccines for animal diseases, pet diseases and public health, and integrated prevention and control of animal diseases.
