The Institute of Chinese Agricultural Heritage Research (ICAHR) – 中华农业文明研究院, specialized in agricultural history and rural studies, is affiliated with CAAS and Nanjing Agricultural University. Established in 1921 as the Research Department of Agricultural History at the Library of the University of Nanking, it was reorganized in 1955 into a specialized institution for the research of Chinese agricultural history. The institute employs over 30 professors and holds a vast collection of thousands of rare books and manuscripts on Chinese agriculture.
Research focuses on the following areas:
- History of agricultural science and technology
- Agricultural economy history
- Rural society history
- Agricultural policies, ideologies, and culture history
- Regional agricultural history
- Global agricultural history
The institute also plans to establish the National Information Center of Chinese Agricultural Heritage. Its researchers have produced numerous publications, including a collated and annotated edition of the Qimin Yaoshu (one of the earliest handbooks on agriculture), A History of Chinese Agronomy, and A History of Agricultural Science and Technology in China.
