Institute of Grassland Research (IGR), Hohhot, Inner Mongolia

Founded in 1963, the Institute of Grassland Research (IGR) – 草原研究所 is the only national institute dedicated to grassland research in China. The institute employs 173 staff members, of which 84 are professional scientists. IGR’s research spans the entire production chain, covering the following areas:

  • Collection, evaluation, preservation, and utilization of grass germplasm resources
  • Cultivation of new grass varieties and seed production
  • Grass product processing and quality safety
  • Grassland machinery and equipment research and development
  • Grassland disaster early warning, prevention, and control
  • Grassland ecological protection and management
  • Grass product quality monitoring and grassland policy

IGR has collected over 20,000 specimens of grass germplasm resources and developed more than 40 new forage grass varieties.

The institute has international collaborations with 30 research institutes across 19 countries, including those in the USA, Netherlands, and Australia.
