Established in 1957, the Institute of Plant Protection (IPP) – 植物保护研究所 employs 239 researchers across seven research departments: Plant Pathology, Agricultural Entomology and Pest Control, Pesticide Science, Biological Control, Biological Invasions, Weed and Rodent Sciences, and Biotechnology for Plant Protection.
IPP is home to several national and ministerial key laboratories, including:
- The State Key Laboratory for Biology of Plant Diseases and Insect Pests
- The National Agricultural Biological Security Science Center
- The National Center for International Research on Agricultural Bio-security
- The Key Laboratory of Crop Integrated Pest Management (MARA)
- The Laboratory for Risk Assessment of Biological Hazard Factors Influencing the Quality and Safety of Agricultural Products (MARA)
- The Center for Management of Invasive Alien Species (MARA)
- The MARA Inspection Test Center for Environmental Safety of GMOs and Plant Resistance
- The MARA Supervision and Test Center for Pesticide Application Assessment
- The MARA-CABI Joint Laboratory of Bio-safety
- The Sino-American Biological Control Laboratory
Additionally, the institute operates eight field experimental stations.
