Founded in 1958, the Lanzhou Institute of Husbandry and Pharmaceutical Sciences (LIHPS) – 兰州畜牧与兽药研究所 is dedicated to addressing major scientific challenges in livestock production. The institute focuses on four main research areas: animal husbandry, veterinary medicine, traditional Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM), and prataculture. Key efforts include the development of sustainable breeding techniques for Tibetan sheep and yak, as well as improving and constructing grasslands and cultivating new pasture varieties.
The institute employs 203 staff members and oversees approximately 365 hectares of test fields. It operates 15 scientific research platforms, including:
