The Nanjing Research Institute for Agricultural Mechanization of MARA (NIAM) – 农业农村部南京农业机械化研究所 was founded in 1957 and has a staff of 255. NIAM focuses on agricultural machinery across various stages of crop production, including tillage, soil preparation, planting, sowing, grain harvesting, crop stalk harvesting, fruit, vegetable, and tea harvesting, crop protection, agro-product processing, and biomass conversion and utilization.
NIAM has established several key platforms, including:
- Quality Monitoring & Test Center of the National Crop Protection Equipment
- NIAM Inspecting Center
- MARA Southern Seed Processing Engineering Technology Center
- CAAS Agricultural Engineering Center
The institute has two sites—one for research and one for field tests, covering 15 hectares. NIAM has established international collaborations with institutions in the US, Germany, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Argentina, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Congo, and Ethiopia. NIAM also contributed to the establishment of the International Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering.
