The Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources (NIEER) of CAS – 西北生态环境资源研究所 was established in 2016 through the merger of five former CAS institutes: the Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, the Lanzhou Center for Oil and Gas Resources, the Lanzhou Branch of the National Science Library, the Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology, and the Qinghai Institute of Salt Lakes.
NIEER is a multidisciplinary research institute specializing in eco-environment, natural resources, and environmental engineering. Its focus areas include the cryosphere and global climate change, permafrost and cold regions engineering, desertification, plateau atmospheric physics and meteorology, water and land resources, environmental rehabilitation, ecology and agriculture, remote sensing information systems, oil and gas geology, plateau biology, and salt lake resources.
By 2022, NIEER had a research staff of 1,198.
