Pearl River Fisheries Research Institute (PRFRI)

The Pearl River Fisheries Research Institute (PRFRI) of CAFS – 珠江水产研究所 is a national fishery research organization under MARA. Located in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, PRFRI is dedicated to conducting both basic and applied research focused on advancing fisheries in the Pearl River and tropical and subtropical zones.

PRFRI’s research priorities include aquatic germplasm resources and genetic breeding, aquaculture and nutrition, aquatic disease control and prevention, aquatic laboratory animals, conservation and restoration of fishery resources, fisheries environmental assessment and protection, recreational fishing, and aquatic product quality and safety. Currently, the institute is focusing on emerging scientific fields such as transgenic research, aquatic invasions, and biosecurity.

Since 2015, PRFRI has also taken on the responsibility of serving as the Office of the Pearl River Fishery Management Council. The institute employs 260 staff members, including 154 professionals, 23 professors, and 35 associate professors.
