The South Subtropical Crops Research Institute (SSCRI) of CATAS – 南亚热带作物研究所, established in 1954, is the only national research institute specializing in south tropical crops research. Located in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province, SSCRI focuses on research in China’s southern subtropical areas, including the dry-hot region of the Jinsha River in Sichuan Province and Yunnan Province, the river valley region of Youjiang in Guangxi Province, Zhanjiang area in Guangdong Province, and Dehong area in Yunnan Province.
With a staff of 182, including 38 senior scientists, SSCRI is actively involved in promoting innovation and science and technology services. These initiatives are often conducted through “new peasant schools”, “small science and technology courtyards”, and and “farmhouse classrooms” to facilitate technology transfer and local agricultural development.
