The College of Animal Science and Technology at Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU) traces its origins to the Agricultural Department established in 1917 at Nanjing Higher Teacher’s College, making it the earliest institution of higher education in animal husbandry and veterinary medicine in China.
The college consists of five departments: Animal Reproduction Science, Animal Genetics and Breeding Science, Animal Nutrition and Feed Science, Intelligent Animal Husbandry and Environmental Science, and Aquatic Science. It has 129 faculty members, including 89 full-time teachers. The college offers a doctoral program and a postdoctoral station in Animal Husbandry.
Undergraduate programs include Animal Science, Aquaculture, the Jin Shanbao Shuyuan Experimental Class (Animal Science and Animal Production Direction), and the Excellence in Agriculture and Forestry Composite Applied Talent Class. The college has more than 700 undergraduate students and 600 graduate students.
The college hosts several national and provincial key laboratories and research centers, including the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Animal Science, the National International Joint Research Center of Animal Gastrointestinal Nutrition (Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science and Technology), the Innovation Intellectual Base of Breeding and Quality Improvement of Excellent Livestock and Poultry Breeds (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs), the Bovine Frozen Semen Quality Supervision, Inspection and Testing Center (Nanjing) (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs), the Animal Physiological and Biological Chemistry Key Laboratory (co-constructed), the Jiangsu Province Joint Laboratory of Animal Gastrointestinal Genome for International Cooperation, the Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Digestive Tract Nutrition and Animal Health, the Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Animal Source Food Production and Safety, the Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Aquatic Animal Nutrition, the Jiangsu Livestock Embryo Engineering Laboratory, and the Jiangsu Dairy Cattle Production Performance Measurement Center.
The college maintains extensive international collaborations, partnering with over 20 universities in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Denmark, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, Japan, and other countries. It has signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with universities from 10 countries, including Mongolia, Pakistan, and Iran, under the framework of the International Joint Research Center for Animal Gastrointestinal Nutrition, leading to the establishment of the “One Belt, One Road” Livestock Science and Technology Innovation Alliance. The college has also signed bilateral cooperation agreements with seven universities, including Awassa University (Ethiopia), Khon Kaen University (Thailand), and Sokonyi Agricultural University (Tanzania).
