College of Animal Science and Technology

The College of Animal Science and Technology at Southwest University (SWU) was established on July 24, 2020, through the merger of the former College of Animal Science and Technology, the former College of Animal Science, and related disciplines in Animal Husbandry and Herbology. Its roots trace back to courses in dairy cattle science and chicken breeding offered by the private West China Union College in 1923.

The college has 93 teaching staff, including 69 full-time teachers, and currently enrolls 1,287 full-time undergraduate students, 200 master’s and doctoral students, and 6 international students. It comprises the Department of Animal Genetic Breeding and Production, the Department of Animal Nutrition and Feed Science, and the Department of Animal Husbandry Engineering. The college offers master’s and doctoral degrees, as well as postdoctoral studies in areas such as animal husbandry, animal genetic breeding, animal nutrition and feed science, and livestock bioengineering.

The college is home to several key research platforms, including the National Animal Science Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, the National Pig Technology Innovation Center, the Chongqing Herbivore Resource Conservation and Utilization Engineering and Technology Research Center, and the Chongqing Beef Cattle Engineering and Technology Research Center. The college specializes in research on healthy breeding technologies for animals in the mountainous regions of southwest China.

Internationally, the college collaborates with more than 20 universities and institutions in countries such as the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Thailand. In 2020, its Sino-foreign Cooperative Program in Animal Science with Australia’s James Cook University was approved by the Ministry of Education. It also participates in the China Scholarship Council International Exchange Funding Program, with partnerships involving Colorado State University (USA), the University of Western Australia, and the Royal Agricultural University (UK).

The college plays a key role in supporting the National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone (Agriculture and Animal Husbandry), China Animal Husbandry Science and Technology City, the core area of the National Modern Animal Husbandry Demonstration Zone, and the National Pig Big Data Center. Its faculty actively contribute to local economic development by providing technical training, technology promotion, poverty alleviation support, and industrial planning in regions such as Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Tibet, and Xinjiang. The college trains more than 5,000 people annually.
