College of Animal Sciences

The College of Animal Sciences at South China Agricultural University (SCAU) has a long history, with its animal husbandry and sericulture disciplines originating from the Agriculture and Forestry Workshop attached to the Guangdong Agricultural Experimental Farm, founded in 1909. The college offers three undergraduate majors: Animal Science, Sericulture, and Intelligent Pastoral Science and Engineering. Within the program, Animal Science also encompasses aspects of sericulture. The college is organized into several departments, including the Department of Animal Genetic Breeding and Reproduction, the Department of Animal Nutrition and Feed Science, the Department of Intelligent Breeding, and the Department of Sericulture, supported by an Experimental Teaching and Training Center and administrative offices. Currently, it employs 117 faculty members and has 1,938 students enrolled, including 874 graduate students and five international students.

The college hosts a range of national science and technology innovation platforms, such as the National Key Laboratory of Swine and Poultry Breeding Industry, the National Engineering and Technology Research Center of Swine Breeding Industry, and the National Regional Livestock and Poultry Gene Bank. National teaching platforms include the National Animal Science Experimental Teaching Center, the National Experimental Zone for Innovation in Talent Cultivation Mode, and the National Talent Cultivation Base for Cooperation in Agricultural Science and Education.

In addition, the college houses key research facilities such as the Key Laboratory of Chicken Genetic Breeding and Reproduction under the Ministry of Agriculture, the Observatory of Animal Nutrition and Feed Science of the Ministry of Agriculture, and several provincial laboratories, including the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Livestock and Poultry Healthy Breeding and Environmental Control, the Guangdong Provincial Engineering and Technology Research Center of Viral Vector Vaccine, and the Guangdong Provincial Sericulture Engineering and Technology Research Center.

The college actively collaborates with major industry leaders, including Dabeinong Group, Jinxinong Group, Yuexiu Group, and Changlong Group, fostering technical and project partnerships to drive innovation and practical applications in animal sciences.
