The College of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at Southwest University (SWU), originally established in 1950 as the Department of Horticulture at Southwest Agricultural College, is one of the university’s earliest and most important departments. The college consists of three departments: Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, and Plants, offering undergraduate majors in horticulture, gardening, and landscape architecture. It currently employs 115 faculty and staff members, including 22 professors and researchers and 42 associate professors. More than 1,700 students are enrolled, spanning undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels.
The college hosts key research centers such as the Konjac Research Center under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA), the Chongqing Flower Engineering Technology Research Center, and the Chongqing University Key Laboratories of Vegetable Science and Pomology. With over 10 research platforms at the ministry, provincial, and university levels, the college also operates the Konjac Resource Utilization Engineering Research Center of Chongqing Universities and the Garden and Landscape Planning and Design Institute of Southwest University. Its facilities include two on-campus experimental farms and more than 20 on-campus and off-campus internship training bases, including partnerships with Chongqing Hualv Biology Co., Ltd., Chongqing Daohe Garden Landscape Planning and Design Co., Ltd., Chongqing Nanshan Botanical Garden, and the Chongqing Garden Expo.
The college engages in extensive international collaboration in academic exchanges, research, and talent development with universities and research institutions in over 20 countries, including the United States, Australia, Japan, the Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, and France. It also runs joint undergraduate training programs, such as the “2+2” program with Colorado State University in the United States and the “3+1” program with Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom.
