The College of Life Sciences at Zhejiang University, part of the Faculty of Agriculture, Life, and Environmental Science, traces its origins to the former Department of Biology, established at National Zhejiang University in September 1929. With over 90 years of history and a legacy of outstanding scholars, the college currently has around 120 faculty and staff members, including 45 professors and 27 associate professors. It enrolls approximately 927 full-time students, comprising 319 undergraduates, 265 master’s degree students, and 343 PhD candidates.

The college is organized into four departments: the Department of Ecology, the Department of Biological Science, the Department of Biotechnology, and the Department of Bioinformatics. These departments provide a comprehensive education and training in the life sciences and are recognized as National Teaching Bases for Biological Science and Biotechnology. Core courses offered include General Biology, Biochemistry, Cellular Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Animal and Plant Physiology, and Bioinformatics. In addition, students have access to a range of optional courses reflecting the latest developments in biological sciences and technology, such as bioengineering, neurobiology, immunology, and developmental biology.

The college is home to several key research facilities, including the State Key Laboratory of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, the State Conservation Center for Gene Resources of Endangered Wildlife, the Key Laboratory of Biosystem Homeostasis and Protection under the Ministry of Education, and the Provincial Key Laboratory of Cell and Genetic Engineering.
