The College of Marine Sciences at South China Agricultural University (SCAU) originated from the Department of Aquaculture within the College of Animal Science. The undergraduate program in Aquaculture was established in 2002, with the first cohort of students enrolled that year. In 2005, the college introduced a master’s degree program in Aquaculture, followed by the establishment of the School of Oceanography in 2016 and the launch of the undergraduate program in Marine Science in 2017. The college comprises four departments: the Department of Aquaculture, the Department of Aquatic Animal Medicine, the Department of Marine Resources and Environment, and the Department of Aquatic Animal Nutrition and Feed Science.
The college offers a postdoctoral research station in Aquatic Biology, along with doctoral and master’s degree authorization points in Aquatic Biology and a master’s degree program in Fisheries Development. Its two undergraduate majors include Aquaculture, which features a specialization in intelligent fishery, and Marine Science.
The college hosts several key provincial research platforms, including the Guangdong Province Aquatic Immunity and Healthy Aquaculture Engineering and Technology Research Center (established in 2018), the Marine Biological Resources Conservation and Utilization Joint Laboratory for Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao Universities (2021), the Guangdong Provincial Facility Fishery and Healthy Aquaculture Science and Technology Innovation Center (2017), and the Guangdong Provincial Modern Agricultural Industry (Aquatic Product Quality and Safety) Technology Research and Development Center (2017).
Positioned in South China with a nationwide focus and outreach to Southeast Asia, the college has built academic exchanges and partnerships with international universities, including the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the National University of Singapore, National Taiwan University, the University of Macau, and Prince of Songkhla University in Thailand.
