College of Veterinary Medicine

The College of Veterinary Medicine at South China Agricultural University (SCAU) has a long-standing history, dating back to 1952 when the animal husbandry and veterinary departments of Sun Yat-sen University, Lingnan University, and Guangxi University were merged into SCAU’s Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine. The college currently employs 120 teaching staff, including 97 full-time teachers and 5 postdoctoral researchers. Its academic disciplines cover veterinary medicine, preventive veterinary medicine, and clinical veterinary medicine.

The college hosts several key research and innovation platforms, such as the National Joint Laboratory for the Prevention and Control of Zoonotic Diseases, the National Reference Laboratory for Veterinary Drug Residues, the National Laboratory for Veterinary Drug Safety Assessment (Environmental Assessment), and the Agricultural Ministry’s Key Laboratory for Animal Vaccine Development. Additional research centers include the National Risk Assessment Laboratory for Veterinary Microbial Drug Resistance, the Key Laboratory for Prevention and Control of Zoonotic Diseases in Guangdong Province, and the Guangdong Province Key Laboratory for Veterinary Drug Development and Safety Evaluation.

The college also operates the Comprehensive Prevention and Control Laboratory for Major Veterinary Diseases, the Traditional Chinese Medicine and Natural Medicine Engineering Technology Research Center for Veterinary Science, the PET Engineering Technology Research Center of Guangdong Province, and an animal biosafety level-III laboratory. It also houses the Livestock and Poultry Products Quality Supervision and Inspection Center of MARA (Guangzhou) and the Animal Hospital Teaching and Practice Center.
