The College of Veterinary Medicine at Southwest University (SWU) was established in July 2020, with its origins tracing back to the private Huaxi Xiehe University and Jianhua Senior Agricultural School of the 1920s and 1930s, giving it nearly a century of academic history. In 2019, it reintroduced the specialty of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, becoming the first in the country to resume enrollment in this field. In 2024, the specialty of Veterinary Public Health was added.
The college has 103 faculty members, including 83 full-time teachers, and over 1,800 full-time undergraduate students, along with 300 doctoral and master’s degree students. It has signed cooperative education agreements with more than 60 domestic high-tech enterprises and research institutes. The college is supported by several key teaching and research platforms, including the Chongqing Veterinary Science Engineering Research Center, Chongqing Veterinary Science Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, and the Chongqing Key Laboratory of Pasture and Grass-Fed Livestock. Other facilities include the Joint Laboratory for International Cooperation on Animal Health and Animal Food Safety, the Institute of Chinese Veterinary Medicine, the Immunology Research Center, the Veterinary Drug Preparation and Quality Control Center, the Animal Disease Rapid Diagnosis and Prevention Center, and a Teaching Animal Hospital.
The college maintains collaborative relations with universities and research institutes in over 20 countries, including the United States, Britain, Canada, Germany, Russia, Japan, the Netherlands, Australia, and Thailand. It offers both long- and short-term student exchange programs with institutions such as Colorado State University, Kitasato University, James Cook University, the Royal Agricultural University, and Khon Kaen University in Thailand.
