The Department of Animal Medical Sciences at Zhejiang University focuses on three second-level disciplines: basic veterinary science, preventive veterinary science, and clinical veterinary science. These areas are supported by dedicated teaching groups and laboratories within the College Laboratory Center, including the animal anatomy lab, physiology lab, micro-morphology lab, microbiology and immunology lab, and clinical veterinary lab. The department also operates the Zhejiang University Animal Hospital and collaborates with more than ten external teaching practice bases. Its key research institutions are the Institute of Preventive Veterinary Medicine and the Institute of Dairy Sciences, the latter co-constructed with other departments.
The department offers doctoral programs in preventive veterinary science, with research areas covering animal immunology and disease control, animal virology and biotechnology, and the etiology and control of zoonoses. Master’s degree research areas include reproductive stem cell development in livestock and poultry, molecular veterinary pharmacology, and gene expression and lactation regulation under basic veterinary science; microbiology, immunology, applied biotechnology, animal epidemiology, and animal product biosafety under preventive veterinary science; and natural drug development, animal disease control, and clinical pharmacology under clinical veterinary science.
The department actively conducts national and provincial key research projects in areas such as livestock and poultry reproduction mechanisms, functional regulation of animal cells, molecular veterinary pharmacology, gene expression, animal etiology, biosafety of animal products, and animal immunological engineering. Notable research achievements include advancements in animal reproduction regulation, biosafety of animal products, animal etiology and immunology, prevention and control of bovine diseases, and the development of natural drugs for animal disease control.
