Dryland Agriculture Research Institute

The Institute of Dryland Agriculture of Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GAAS) was established in 1987. It is a comprehensive scientific research institution mainly engaged in dryland agriculture research and development. The Institute has 44 employees and boasts 11 scientific research platforms. It is equipped with a 10m³ intelligent artificial climate chamber and 510 acres of experimental land.

The work primarily focuses on three different types of areas in Gansu Province: semi-arid, semi-humid and dry, and high-cold and humid. The Institute addresses key issues such as efficient use of rainwater, soil and water conservation, environmental improvement and vegetation restoration, crop variety improvement, GIS technology application, soil testing and formula fertilization, crop drought resistance physiology, characteristic industry development, and rural revitalization in the central and eastern regions of the Loess Plateau. The aim is to research the efficient use of resources and key technologies in dryland agricultural areas.

The Institute consists of the following departments:

  • Dryland Agricultural Ecology Research Laboratory
  • Dryland Agricultural Resources Research Laboratory
  • Key Laboratory
  • Winter Wheat Breeding Laboratory
  • Soybean Research Laboratory
  • Tillage Research Laboratory
  • High Cold and Wet Agricultural Sustainable Development Research Laboratory
  • GIS Room
  • Office and Finance Room

It has set up long-term comprehensive experimental stations in Zhenyuan, Dingxi, and Zhuanglang, which are typical ecological types in the central and eastern parts of Gansu Province.
