Flower Research Institute

The Flower Research Institute of the Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (YAAS) is a professional research institute focused on the selection and breeding of new flower varieties, the utilization of wild and special flower resources, and the development of seedlings (bulbs) of excellent flower varieties. The institute consists of several departments, including the R&D center of cut flowers, R&D center of bulb flowers, R&D center of moon season flowers, research laboratory of flower biotechnology (which includes modern laboratories for flower cell biology and molecular biology), and the department of achievement transformation and product development center. It also boasts over 600 mu of flower breeding bases, more than 200,000 square meters of greenhouses, 3,000 square meters of group culture rooms, and 3,000 cubic meters of cold storage.

The institute has made outstanding achievements in areas such as wild flower research, new flower variety selection and breeding, standardized flower cultivation techniques, post-harvest treatment technology, and flower product quality testing. The scope of research has expanded to cutting-edge fields like the genetic diversity of flowers and molecular-directed breeding.

In the past decade, the Institute has undertaken several national, provincial, and ministerial-level research projects, including international cooperation initiatives. It has received multiple provincial and ministerial-level awards, particularly in seedling detoxification, large-scale breeding technology, standardized cultivation technology for Yunnan’s staple flowers, and preservation and quality testing technology for flower products. These efforts have placed the Institute among the top ranks in the country. Additionally, in terms of cultivating new flower varieties with independent intellectual property rights, nearly 10 new varieties of balsam ferns and African chrysanthemums have been declared for the protection of new plant variety rights in China.
