Fruit Tree and Horticulture Research Institute

In 2006, the Fruit Tree Research Institute was integrated with the Lanzhou Experimental Field to form the Forestry, Fruit, and Flower Research Institute of Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GAAS). At present, the institute has 51 employees. It serves the development of the province’s forestry, fruit, and flower industries, focusing on research related to the collection, preservation, evaluation, and utilization of forestry, fruit, and flower germplasm resources, new variety breeding, cultivation technology research, and integrated innovation. The Institute also conducts talent training, technology demonstration, achievement transformation, scientific and technological services, and training.

The Institute is organized into the following research departments: Peach Research Laboratory, Apple Research Laboratory, Pear Research Laboratory, Grape Research Laboratory, Specialty Forestry and Fruit Research Laboratory, Flower Research Laboratory, Fruit Tree Seedling Propagation and Production Technology Laboratory, and Achievement Transformation Office. Additionally, the Institute oversees the MARA Northwest Fruit Tree Scientific Observation and Experimental Station, the Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences’ High-cold Fruit Tree Comprehensive Experimental Station, and the Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences’ Qin’an Experimental Station. The Institute has established 26 experimental demonstration bases for apple, peach, walnut, pear, grape, and strawberry in Jingning, Qin’an, Qingshui, Jingtai, Gaotai, and Yongjing, which are the main fruit production areas in Gansu Province.

There are 5 professional laboratories, including physiological and biochemical laboratories, ecological laboratories, tissue culture laboratories, soil laboratories, and molecular laboratories. The Institute also features two smart greenhouses and two solar greenhouses, covering a total area of 1,960 m². The forest, fruit, and flower germplasm resource preservation nursery and variety garden spans 300 mu and preserves more than 1,400 resources.
