Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GAAS)

The Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences – 甘肃省农业科学院 was established in 1958. The headquarters of the Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences is located in Anning District, Lanzhou City, covering an area of 396.00 acres. In addition, the academy operates three experimental fields in Zhangye, Yuzhong, and Huangyang outside Lanzhou, with a total land area of 9252.30 Mu, and the Qinwangchuan experimental base covers an area of 459 Mu. The total area of the academy is 10107.3 Mu.

The departments of the academy include the Crop Research Institute, Potato Research Institute, Wheat Research Institute, Dryland Agriculture Research Institute, Biotechnology Institute, Soil Fertilizer and Water-Saving Agriculture Research Institute, Vegetable Research Institute, Forestry, Fruit and Flower Research Institute, Plant Protection Institute, Agricultural Products Storage and Processing Research Institute, Livestock, Grass and Green Agriculture Research Institute (with the addition of the Institute of Agricultural Quality Standards and Testing Technology), Economic Crops and Beer Raw Materials Research Institute (with the addition of the Chinese Medicinal Materials Research Institute), and Agricultural Economics and Information Institute. In addition, there are 3 experimental stations (fields) in Ganzhou District, Zhangye, Huangyang Town, Wuwei, and Yuzhong County, Lanzhou. At present, the academy has a staff of 781 people.

The main research areas of the academy include: collection and preservation of crop germplasm resources and breeding of new varieties, agricultural resources and environment in arid areas (oasis water conservation, dryland agriculture), monitoring of major agricultural diseases, insect pests and weeds, and green prevention and control, breeding of new vegetable varieties and facility agriculture, breeding of new varieties of forestry, fruit and flowers and green and efficient cultivation, breeding of Chinese medicinal materials and economic crops and efficient planting, breeding of new cattle and sheep varieties, sustainable development of grassland agriculture, quality and safety of agricultural products and deep processing, agricultural information and agricultural economy (editing and publishing the scientific journal “Cold and Arid Agricultural Science”), and research and development of agricultural intelligent equipment.

The academy has 6 national agricultural science experimental stations, 9 field scientific observation and experimental stations of the MARA, 19 provincial and ministerial key laboratories and engineering technology centers, 11 institute-level key laboratories, and 13 engineering (technology) centers. Additionally, there are 24 comprehensive experimental stations and more than 400 rural bases in different ecological types throughout the province, with a scientific research and experimental land area of about 8,500 acres.
