Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GXAAS)

The Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GXAAS) – 广西农业科学院 was founded in 1935. The headquarters of the academy is located in Nanning City, Xiangsi Lake, within the Nanning National High-tech Industrial Development Zone. The academy comprises 20 research institutes and 169 innovation teams, with 11 branch institutes and 58 experimental stations.

The academy focuses on applied and basic research, primarily in the plantation industry. Its areas of expertise include breeding and cultivating high-quality varieties of crops such as grains, sugar, fruits, vegetables, oils, flax, edible fungi, and flowers. It also conducts technical research in plant protection, nutrition, agricultural resources and environment, agricultural product processing and quality safety, agricultural information and economy, among others. Additionally, the academy is responsible for researching the development of new technologies.

There are numerous research platforms, including 2 national-local joint engineering research centers, 5 national crop improvement sub-centers, 1 national agricultural science and technology innovation alliance, 7 laboratories and inspection/testing centers under MARA, 2 International Agricultural Innovation Institutes, 23 national and departmental original seed bases, resource nurseries (repositories), and field scientific observatories. The academy also has 7 key laboratories, 16 engineering research centers at the regional level, and 15 crop germplasm resource nurseries in Guangxi, alongside 4 technology transfer centers and 1 post-doctoral research station.

The academy covers an area of more than 1,390 hectares, with seven long-term fixed research and experimental bases, including the headquarters, Lijian, Mingyang, Dingdang, Hainan, Thermal Crops Institute, and South Asia Institute. The comprehensive experimental building spans a total area of 26,000 square meters, equipped with international-standard scientific research instrumentation.

With a workforce of 1,423 employees, GXAAS is committed to global collaboration and innovation. It has established several organizational platforms such as the International Association of Sugar Industry Science and Technology (IAPSIT), the China (Guangxi) – ASEAN Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Alliance, and the Guangxi-Taiwan Agricultural Development and Technology Exchange Association. The academy has extensive scientific and technological cooperation with over 40 countries and regions, as well as more than 10 international organizations. It has implemented numerous international cooperation projects in ASEAN and African countries and serves as a national demonstration and promotion base for introducing foreign intellectual achievements and fostering international scientific and technological cooperation.
