The Hainan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (HNAAS) – – 海南省农业科学院 is located in the Wugongzhi Scenic Spot in Qiongshan District, Haikou City. It covers an area of 13 hectares and has a scientific experimental land area of 106 hectares, which includes the Chenghuangmai Yongfa Scientific Research Base, the Ledong Liguo Southern Breeding Base, and the Ding’an Livestock and Poultry Base. The academy comprises 12 research institutes, including the Sanya Research Institute in Sanya South-Propagation Science and Technology City, 7 academician innovation platforms, and 1 post-doctoral scientific research workstation. There are 251 employees.
Over the past 30 years since its establishment, Hainan Academy of Agricultural Sciences has achieved fruitful results, including the collection and preservation of wild rice resources and innovative utilization, the selection and breeding of new varieties of mountain rice, amphibious rice, conservation and innovative utilization of local animal husbandry varieties, the collection and innovative utilization of tropical excellent and rare fruit tree resources, and much more. The academy focuses on research in areas such as grain, vegetable seeds, oil, fruit local livestock and poultry varieties, provincial and municipal flowers, quality and safety of agricultural products, nutrition and health, as well as arable land protection and improvement.
HNAAS has established 28 national, provincial, and ministerial-level science and technology platforms, including six comprehensive experimental stations of the National Industrial Technology System, six standard stations of the National Agricultural Science Experiment Station (Hainan), five scientific observation experimental stations of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, three germplasm resource nurseries of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, one pesticide field efficacy registration and testing unit of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and eight provincial key laboratories, as well as three provincial engineering technology research and development centers. With the completion of a 12,700-square-meter scientific research laboratory building, the academy has significantly improved its research facilities.
The academy participates in nine scientific and technological innovation alliances, such as the China-ASEAN Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Alliance, the China Tropical Agriculture Foreign Cooperation and Development Alliance, the National Vegetable Science and Technology and Industry Innovation Alliance, and the National Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Alliance. It has organized scientific and technological personnel to carry out agricultural scientific and technological training in Central America and Africa, and has actively participated in the “One Belt, One Road” cooperation project in Equatorial Guinea. It successfully hosted the Fifth High-level Symposium of Presidents of International Agricultural Science Institutes (GLAST), established close ties with more than 30 international agricultural institutions, and promoted Hainan’s tropical agriculture to the international agricultural science and technology community.
