The Huang Yang Experimental Field of Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GAAS) is located in Huangyang Town, Liangzhou District, Wuwei City. Established in 1958, it primarily focuses on crop germplasm creation, new variety breeding, and achievement demonstration and promotion. Positioned in the Hexi Corridor, it plays a key role in supporting the province’s food security and agricultural supply-side reform. The experimental field serves as a scientific and technological innovation base in the Shiyang River Basin, under the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The field has 23 employees.
The experimental field is situated in the alluvial plain of Qilian Mountain at an altitude of 1,720 meters. The area experiences a continental climate with drought and low rainfall. Located near the edge of the Tengger Desert, the region is characterized by strong solar radiation, abundant sunshine, minimal rainfall, and high evaporation. The average annual temperature is 8°C, with the highest recorded temperature at 39.5°C and the lowest at -26.5°C. The region receives between 1,664.6 and 2,532.7 hours of sunshine annually, and the average annual rainfall is 154.6 mm, with most precipitation occurring in July, August, and September. The evaporation rate is 2,020 mm, and the main meteorological disasters are drought, dry hot winds, strong winds, low temperatures, and frost. The field spans 720 mu of land, with 520 mu designated as high-standard experimental farmland.
The experimental field has established several research platforms, including the Northwest Branch of the National Barley Breeding Center, Gansu Wheat Engineering Center, and Gansu Wheat Engineering Laboratory. It has contributed to the introduction of new crop varieties, such as spring wheat, beer barley, and fodder barley, to the national market. In addition, the field conducts research on the breeding and high-yield cultivation technologies for cash crops like hops, sugar beets, soybeans, and sesame. The research also covers the breeding of new wheat varieties, the introduction and screening of improved varieties, and the promotion of agricultural technologies focused on water-saving, pesticide-saving, soil improvement, and cold and arid agricultural techniques.
