Hunan Agricultural Products Processing Research Institute

Hunan Agricultural Products Processing Research Institute at the Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (HUNAAS) is the only provincial institution in Hunan specializing in agricultural product food processing, quality, and safety research and testing. It employs 53 professional and technical personnel.

The institute has 6 research teams and 1 pilot demonstration plant focused on fruit and vegetable processing, specialty agricultural products processing, livestock and aquatic products processing, dry and mixed grains processing, crop starch chemistry and metabolomics, and agricultural product quality and safety. It has received recognition from national authorities, with several collaborative innovation teams and national laboratories, including the National Innovative Talent Promotion Plan Key Fruit and Vegetable Processing and Quality and Safety Innovation Team and the Agricultural Products Processing and Quality and Safety Innovation Team established by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

It is also home to several key research platforms, such as the State Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Comprehensive Utilization of Citrus Resources; the Risk Assessment Laboratory for Agricultural Product Quality and Safety of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (Changsha); the National Research and Development Specialized Center for Citrus Processing Technology; the Hunan Agricultural Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Technology Sharing Platform; the International Joint Laboratory on Fruit and Vegetable Processing and Quality Safety; the Hunan Key Laboratory for Fruit and Vegetable Storage, Processing and Quality Safety; and the Hunan Key Laboratory for Citrus and Lake Agricultural Products.

It is the designated organization for monitoring the quality of green food products by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, as well as for the identification and testing of geographical indications for agricultural products. Additionally, it evaluates and identifies the nutritional quality of nationally recognized, special, high-quality, and new agricultural products, and provides inspection and testing services for the quality supervision of circulating commodities in Hunan Province. The institute serves as a national demonstration base for agricultural product quality and safety science and technology and is authorized by Hunan University to offer master’s degrees in food chemistry and biotechnology. It also acts as a postgraduate innovation training base in Hunan Province. The National Citrus Processing Industry Technology Innovation Strategy Alliance, the National Fruit Standardization Technical Committee’s Storage and Processing Sub-Technical Committee, and the Hunan Food Science and Technology Society fall under its management.
