The Hunan Institute of Nuclear Agriculture and Chinese Medicine at the Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (HUNAAS) was founded in 1979, formerly known as the Hunan Provincial Institute of Atomic Energy Agricultural Applications. In 2025, it was reorganized to expand its field of Chinese herbal medicine research. The institute has 78 employees.
It specializes in biological irradiation mutagenesis, irradiation modification of new materials, irradiation preservation of agricultural products, and creation of germplasm resources. The Irradiation Center, located in the Liuyang Economic Development Zone, features a 2 million curie 60Co-γ irradiator and high-energy electron gas pedal and X-ray irradiator, forming a comprehensive platform for radiation mutagenesis.
The institute also hosts several key innovation platforms, including the Hunan Engineering Research Center of Biological Irradiation Technology, the Hunan Engineering Research Center of Agricultural Biological Irradiation, the Medicinal Plant Research Center of Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and the Changsha Medicinal Plant Characteristic Planting Demonstration Base, amongst others.
