The Institute for Biotechnology (IBT) at Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SAAS) is a research unit focused on basic and applied research in agricultural biobreeding and biosafety testing technologies. The institute leverages four key scientific and technological innovation platforms to support its work: the Crop Ecological Environment Safety Supervision, Inspection and Testing Center (Shanghai) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Agricultural Genetic Breeding, the Sino-Vietnamese International Joint Laboratory of Agricultural Sciences, and the Shanghai Specialty Corn Engineering Technology Research Center.
With more than 50 employees, the institute plays a vital role in advancing research in agricultural biobreeding and biosafety evaluation. Its primary research directions include crop characteristic small spore breeding, biosafety evaluation and detection, and the application of synthetic biology in agriculture. The institute addresses critical technological challenges in the seed industry, particularly in biobreeding and biosafety.
