The Institute of Plant Protection and Soil Fertilizer of the Hubei Academy of Agricultural Sciences was established in February 2001 and currently has 78 employees. The institute’s research focuses on crop pests, diseases, and weeds, the development of bio-source pesticides, safety evaluations of genetically modified crops and invasive alien organisms, crop nutrition and the efficient use of fertilizers, arable land fertility enhancement, the comprehensive utilization of agricultural waste, agricultural environmental management, and the development of new fertilizers.
The institute has eight research laboratories, including Crop Pathology, Crop Insect Pests, Pesticides, Weeds and Invasive Organisms, Fertilization and Agricultural Environment, Soil and Plant Nutrition, Agricultural Resources and Fertilizers, and Agricultural Testing and Analysis.
In addition, there are 17 national and provincial platforms that provide critical support to the institute’s research. These platforms include: the National Soil Quality Observation and Experiment Station in Hongshan, the National Agricultural Environment Observation and Experiment Station in Qianjiang, the Key Laboratory of Comprehensive Management of Crop Pests in Central China under MARA, the Key Laboratory of Fertilizer Utilization of Wastes under MARA, the Scientific Observation and Experiment Station of Cultivated Land Conservation in Qianjiang under MARA, the Key Field Observation Station of Ecological and Environmental Protection of Brown Soil in Wuhan under MARA, the Key Scientific Observation Station of Agro-Transgenic Organisms under MARA, the Scientific Observation Station of Ecological and Environmental Protection of Brown Soil in Wuhan, the Agricultural Genetically Modified Organisms Experimental Base, the MARA pesticide registration test unit, the MARA arable land quality standards laboratory, the crop pests, weeds, and pests prevention and control of Hubei Province Key Laboratory, the Hubei straw agricultural use of engineering and technology research centers, the Hubei Agricultural Pollution Prevention and Control Engineering Technology Research Center of Agricultural Surface Sources, the Hubei Provincial Agricultural Environmental Governance Engineering Research Center, the Third National Soil Census Testing Laboratory, the Inspection and Testing Organization (CMA), the Agricultural Product Quality and Safety Testing Organization (CATL), and the Soil Sample Bank of the Third National Soil Census of Hubei Province.
