The Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary of the Tibet Academy of Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Sciences (TAAAS) was established in 1963, based on the Autonomous Region Veterinary Biopharmaceutical Factory. It is a regional scientific research institution that integrates genetic breeding, nutritional regulation, environmental control, healthy breeding, disease prevention and control, and the research and development of Tibetan veterinary drugs for six major livestock and poultry species, including yak, dairy cow, Tibetan sheep, Tibetan chicken, and Tibetan pig. The institute currently has 106 employees.
The institute operates an animal husbandry science and technology incubation base, a yak research and development center, an animal husbandry research office, and a veterinary research office. It has established nine scientific research and innovation teams specializing in yak, dairy cows, Tibetan sheep, meat sheep, cashmere goats, Tibetan chickens, livestock infectious diseases, livestock parasitic diseases, and Tibetan veterinary medicines.
Currently, the institute hosts three key laboratories at the national, ministerial, and regional levels: the State Key Laboratory of Highland Barley and Yak Germplasm Resources and Genetic Improvement, the Key Laboratory of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Livestock and Poultry Genetic Breeding of MARA, and the Tibet Autonomous Region Key Laboratory of Parasites. The institute also serves as the office location for the Tibet Society of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine. It is responsible for a wide range of fundamental, applied, and public welfare research projects in animal husbandry and veterinary sciences across the region.
