The Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of the Hubei Academy of Agricultural Sciences was founded in 1958. Its research focuses on several key areas, including the mining and innovative utilization of superior germplasm resources for livestock, poultry, and pasture; the genetic breeding of livestock and poultry, including the selection and breeding of new breeds; the development of comprehensive prevention and control technologies for livestock and poultry diseases, including the creation of new biologics; the research and development of clean breeding processes and new technologies for livestock and poultry; animal nutrition regulation; the development of new feed resources; and gene editing of livestock and embryo engineering.
The institute covers more than 8,000 mu of land and has 90,000 square meters of building facilities. It consists of six research sections: the Pig Research Institute, Poultry Research Institute, Grass Husbandry Research Institute, Veterinary Medicine Research Institute, Animal Nutrition Research Institute, and Animal Biotechnology Research Institute. The institute employs 172 people, including 105 professional and technical personnel, 15 researchers, and 42 associate researchers.
The Institute has established seven national scientific research platforms, including the National Livestock Engineering and Technology Research Center, the Key Laboratory of Livestock and Poultry Bacterial Disease Control Preparation Creation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the National Agricultural Science Jiangxia Observation and Experiment Station. Additionally, it has 16 provincial scientific research platforms, such as the Key Laboratory of Animal Embryo Engineering and Molecular Breeding in Hubei, the Key Laboratory of Livestock and Poultry Pathogenic Microbiology in Hubei, and the Livestock and Poultry Epidemic Disease Diagnostic Technology and Research and Engineering Center of Hubei Province. The institute also maintains long-term cooperation and exchange relationships with scientific research institutions in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, New Zealand, Pakistan, and other countries.
