The Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science at the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SAAS) was originally established as the Shanghai Veterinary Clinic under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the East China Military and Administrative Committee in 1952. The institute focuses on animal genetics and breeding, innovation and utilization of germplasm resources, diagnosis and prevention of animal epidemic diseases, development of bio-products, animal environment and welfare, as well as animal feeds and nutrition.
Currently, the institute operates seven research laboratories:
- Laboratory of Livestock Genetics & Breeding
- Laboratory of Poultry Genetics & Breeding
- Laboratory of Animal Nutrition
- Laboratory of Animal Environment & Welfare
- Laboratory of Livestock Epidemic Disease
- Laboratory of Poultry Epidemic Disease
- Laboratory of Animal Genetic Engineering
Additionally, the institute oversees two significant scientific research platforms:
- National Poultry Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Agriculture
- Shanghai Municipal Key Laboratory of Agricultural Genetics and Breeding
The institute also supports two companies:
- Shanghai Jiamu Biological Products Co., Ltd.
- Shanghai Shenfeng Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science Technology Co., Ltd.
The institute has three experimental farms:
- Shanghai White Pig Breeding Farm
- Yellow-feathered Broiler Breeding Farm
- White Goat Breeding Farm
The institute currently employs about 90 staff members.
