Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary

Founded in 1908, the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary at Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences (ZAAS) is the leading research center in this field in Zhejiang province. Its primary goal is to address key technical challenges in the province’s animal husbandry sector. The institute focuses on livestock and poultry breeding, animal nutrition, feed resource development, animal disease diagnosis, prevention and treatment, and biological engineering and equipment. It operates 10 research groups and 3 experimental farms, and is home to several significant research platforms, such as the ZAAS Center for Laboratory Animals, MARA Laboratory for Animal Resources Evaluation and Utilization, Zhejiang Platform of Animal Husbandry Innovations, and Zhejiang Center for Animal Genetic Breeding Techniques. The institute employs 81 staff members, 44 of whom are scientists. It has also developed several new animal breeds, including the Zhejiang Middle White Pig, “Guoshao NO. 1” Egg-laying Duck, “Shendan NO. 2” Laying Duck, Yongqing Rex Rabbit, New Duroc Pig Strains, “Lvjiahei” Pig, and Jinyun Duck. Additionally, the institute has introduced a series of new technologies for efficient and environmentally friendly animal raising, including SEW systems in scaled pig farms, battery-cage systems for ducks, and advancements in animal epidemics diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.
