The Institute of Biotechnology of Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GXAAS) was established in 1979. The institute is primarily focused on the collection and evaluation of crop resources that have regional advantages or are considered specialties or rarities, such as bananas, specialty fruits, and Chinese medicinal herbs. It also works on the selection, breeding, and efficient cultivation of new crop varieties. The institute employs 47 staff members.
The Institute consists of several specialized laboratories, including the Banana Genetic Improvement Laboratory, Medicinal Plants Utilization Laboratory, Good Seed Breeding and Cultivation Laboratory, Good Seed Selection and Application Laboratory, Plant Healthy Seedling Laboratory, Specialty Crops Resource Utilization Laboratory, and Specialty Aquatic Crops Research Laboratory (operating from 2006 to 2023).
In terms of research platforms, the Institute is home to numerous national and provincial-level scientific research facilities, such as:
- Guangxi Banana Sub-center of the National Tropical Fruit Tree Variety Improvement Center
