The Biotechnology Institute of Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GAAS) was established in 2006. It utilizes modern agricultural biotechnology to conduct research on crop genetic improvement, crop breeding application technology, cultivation technology, agricultural microbial application, seed and seedling breeding technology, as well as seed and seedling quality inspection and testing. The Institute is also involved in talent training, technology demonstration, achievement transformation, scientific and technological services, and training. The Institute currently has 33 employees.
The Institute houses five laboratories: the Molecular Breeding Center, the Seed and Seedling Quality Inspection Center, the Specialty Crop Seedling Breeding Center, the Cell Engineering Laboratory, and the Microbiology and Circular Agriculture Laboratory. Additionally, the Institute operates two national modern agricultural industry technology systems: the Edible Lily Cultivation Technology Posts of the Chinese Medicinal Materials Industry Technology System and the Lanzhou Comprehensive Experimental Station for Sesame of the Specialty Oil Industry Technology System.
