Institute of Citrus

The Institute of Citrus at Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences (ZAAS) was founded in 1936 in Taizhou, Zhejiang. Its predecessor, the Zhejiang Horticulture Improvement Farm, was the first professional research institution focused on citrus in China. The institute’s research covers citrus and local fruit resources, including breeding, cultivation, protection, processing, nutrition, and quality. It also provides services in science dissemination, planning, field trials, and analytical testing. The institute is home to the Zhejiang Branch of the National Improvement Center for Citrus Cultivars and is involved in fruit tree germplasm collection, preservation, evaluation, and utilization. It has preserved over 610 citrus germplasm resources and more than 100 bayberry and loquat varieties. In recent years, the institute has improved and selected over 20 new citrus cultivars. The institute currently has 64 employees.
